Ply is built so that what you capture stays on your Mac. This policy explains the few things that do leave it, why, and who handles them. “Ply”, “we” and “us” mean Ply, the maker of the Ply app for Mac and this website.

The short version

  • Your notes, tasks and reminders are stored on your Mac. We don’t have an account system, and we can’t see them.
  • When you talk to Ply, your request, a few relevant notes, and the name of the app, site or conversation you’re in (for example a contact’s name in Messages) go to Ply AI, which is processed by OpenAI, with the page’s address or the open file’s path. Page text, your messages and screen contents are never sent.
  • OpenAI doesn’t use Ply AI requests to train its models, and keeps them for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring only.
  • Payments are handled by Paddle. We never see your card details.
  • Ply uses an anonymous device key, not your name or email, to check your trial and subscription.
  • No analytics, no ads, no tracking, and we don’t sell data.

What stays on your Mac

Everything you capture in Ply, and your settings, is stored on your Mac. It isn’t uploaded to us or synced to a cloud. You can export it whenever you like, and erasing something removes it for good.

To keep what you capture with the right work, Ply notes which app, website, file or conversation you’re in, with the permissions macOS asks you for. Ply never reads the text on your screen or the contents of a page. This stays on your Mac and only leaves it as described under Ply AI, below.

Your voice is transcribed on your Mac. Audio is never sent to us or to anyone else.

Ply AI

Ply AI is optional. It works only when you hold ⌥ A and talk to Ply. Each time you do, Ply sends the following to answer that request:

  • the text of your request, as transcribed on your Mac;
  • a small selection of your notes and tasks that are relevant to the request;
  • the name and address of what’s in front of you: the app, site or conversation you’re in (for example a contact’s name in Messages), and the current page’s address and title, or the open file’s path in your code editor.

Page text, your messages and screen contents are never sent. Ply AI doesn’t read, summarize, or answer questions about what’s on a page or in a conversation.

Ply AI requests are processed by OpenAI, which acts as our service provider. Requests are not used to train its models. OpenAI may keep them for up to 30 days to monitor for abuse, then deletes them. We don’t keep the content of your requests; we keep only what we need to count usage and prevent abuse.

If you never use Ply AI, none of this is sent.

Your anonymous device key

Ply uses an anonymous device key. It isn’t tied to your name or email address. We use it to check whether your trial or subscription is active, and prevent abuse.

Payments

Ply Pro is sold through Paddle, our reseller and Merchant of Record. Paddle handles checkout, payment, billing, taxes, invoices and refunds, and processes your payment details under its own privacy policy. We never see or store your full card details. Paddle shares with us what we need to manage your subscription, such as your email address, country, the plan you bought, and the status of your payments.

Site icons

To show a website’s icon in Ply, your Mac fetches it directly from that website, as your browser would. That website can see the request, including your IP address, like any visit. We aren’t involved in that request.

This website

This website doesn’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs, such as IP addresses and the pages requested, for a short time to run and protect the site.

If you sign up for updates, we keep your email address with Brevo, our newsletter provider, to send you occasional news about Ply. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time. If you email us, we keep the conversation so we can help you.

Who we share data with

We only share data with the service providers that make Ply work, and only for that purpose:

  • OpenAI, to process Ply AI requests;
  • Paddle, to sell and manage Ply Pro;
  • Brevo, to keep the update list and send its emails;
  • our hosting and email providers, to run our services and our mail.

We don’t sell or rent personal data, and we don’t share it for advertising. We may disclose information if the law requires it. Some of these providers are based in the United States or other countries; where the law requires, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.

How long we keep it

  • What you capture in Ply: on your Mac, until you delete it.
  • Ply AI requests: not stored by us; up to 30 days at OpenAI for abuse monitoring.
  • Usage records for your device key: as long as needed to run your trial and subscription.
  • Purchase records: as long as the law requires for tax and accounting.
  • Newsletter address: until you unsubscribe. Support emails: as long as needed to help you.

Your choices and rights

You can use Ply without Ply AI, turn off website detection in Settings, export everything, and erase anything you’ve captured. Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR and California law, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or port your personal data, and to object to or restrict how it’s used. Because what you capture stays on your Mac, most of it is already in your hands. For anything we or Paddle hold, write to support@getply.app and we’ll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

Ply isn’t directed at children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their personal data.

Changes

If we change how Ply handles your data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top, and tell you in the app or by email before a significant change takes effect.
